KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Thursday announced that it would support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate in the contest for the Senate’s opposition leader.
The announcement came after a PTI delegation visited MQM-P leaders in Bahadurabad earlier today.
In a joint press conference along with PTI’s Imran Ismail and Senator Azam Swati, MQM-P leader Faisal Sabzwari said it was not appropriate for them to vote for Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Sherry Rehman.
The PPP has destroyed Sindh in last 10 years, Sabzwari added.
The PPP has nominated Sherry Rehman for the slot of the opposition leader in the Senate while Swati could be the PTI’s nominee for the said position.
The PPP, with 20 seats in the Senate, will need the support of other opposition parties to have their opposition leader appointed.
The PTI has a total of 12 seats in the Upper House. With MQM-P’ support, the number would reach the figure of 17. Moreover, there are around a dozen independent senators from the tribal areas and Balochistan on the opposition benches.
