LAHORE: In his address to the ninth summit of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organisation in Istanbul on Friday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the organisation has fallen short of achieving its set economic and trade goals.
The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation was established in 1997 with the objectives of improving member states’ position in the global economy, diversifying and creating new opportunities in trade relations and enhancing standards of living. Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey are among its members.
While addressing an opening session of the summit, PM Abbasi said, “Twenty years ago, the leaders of our countries established this organisation to promote cooperation in the field of the development, but we have fallen short of fulfilling our trade and economic objectives”.
He also urged the member states to improve economic and trade cooperation.
Explaining Pakistan’s achievement in countering terrorism he said that Pakistan has successfully defeated terrorism with a comprehensive strategy.
“Improved security situation paved a way for the revival of economy,” he said.
At this occasion, Pakistan handed over the chairmanship of the organization to Turkey after chairing it for almost five years.
